Tout commence en 1824, lorsque le Dr Siegert, exerçant comme chirurgien des armées de Simon Bolivar, dans la ville d’Angostura, améliore la recette des bitters aromatiques, utilisés à des fins thérapeutiques.

Ses trois enfants fondent sur l’île de Trinidad & Tobago une entreprise commercialisant des bitters, basés sur la recette mise au point par leur père. Ceux-ci rencontrent un vif succès, et l’usine exporte à l’international.

En 1949, c’est le grand tournant : après plusieurs années de recherche, l’usine se tourne vers la distillation de jus de canne à sucre, et la production de rhum, à partir du fameux alambic à cinq colonnes qui est le signe distinctif de la marque.

A la fin des années soixante, la société acquérant une stature internationale pour ses rhums de qualité, en plus de ses Amers, étendant son réseau de distribution à travers plus de 140 pays. Ces dernières années, Angostura a doublé ses capacités de stockage et de distillation à Trinité, avec des volumes moyens de production qui sont passés de 1,3 million de litres en 1960 à 20 millions de litres en 1998.

Les bouteilles de la marque remportent de nombreux prix, gages de leur qualité, comme par exemple lors du San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
